Capturing the Imagination in Ways Only Visual Expression Can

In the Course in Video & Media Arts, students work on creating artistic video works that are capable of touching the hearts of viewers. The curriculum is organized around the three subfields: art animation, short film, and media art. Students can work in a variety of formats that include music videos, commercials, video installations, and works using projection mapping. There are also classes that bring in leading video artists, and students can broaden the scope of their work through exposure to the latest techniques and methods of expression. In addition, we hold screenings that are planned and managed by students with an emphasis on both creation and communication. with the expectations that our students will grow as artists by presenting their work and receiving constructive feedback.     [Advanced Studio Art / Year 3]
    In this class, leading animators, filmmakers, and contemporary artists active in Japan and abroad are invited as guest lecturers to give workshops. By hearing stories from working professionals, Students gain an understanding of the video and media industries and envision a career after graduation, which is designed to raise their motivation. In addition, by coming into contact with artists who are reshaping the field, students learn about the possibilities of visual expression and gain insights into how to transform and enhance their own work. This class is designed to help students equip students with a flexible mindset as they prepare for their graduation project. Building upon the knowledge and techniques gained in their second year of study, students add the skills they need for the culminating work of their undergraduate experience.

What you will study

  1. 1STYEAR

    Laying a solid artistic and creative foundation

    Students take common courses in the Faculty of Fine Arts to develop their foundations as artists and creators, including the ability to observe, think, and imagine. They also learn the basics across all seven courses and start to explore which fields they would like to pursue.

  2. 2NDYEAR

    Learning the basics of video production

    Students learn to use software such as 3ds Max for 3DCG, CLIP STUDIOPAINT for 2D animation, and Adobe Premiere Pro and AfterEffects for video editing.

  3. 3RDYEAR

    Producing individual and group works

    Students gain experience completing a work in its entirety, doing everything from shooting to editing on their own. Students also work in groups to produce works for advancement to the next level, which are presented at screenings and other events and are also distributed outside the university.

  4. 4THYEAR

    Pursuing a unique expression of your own

    Students engage in their graduation work, making full use of the skills and expressive vocabulary they have developed over the past four years of study. They strive for originality and their own unique creative expression when completing the final work of their undergraduate career.

    Global aspirations for an experimental film pioneer

    My father exposed me to many experimental films in high school, and as I began visiting film festivals, I began to dream of making my own films. Attracted by the welcoming environment and the fact that an artist I admired was on the faculty, I decided to enroll in Kyoto Seika University. Experimental film deviates from the usual conventions of narrative film by employing techniques such as looping the same scene or shooting in the dark. I feel that studying video as an art form is perfect for me, and right now, I'm most interested in the topic of “meaninglessness” as a course theme. I’m hoping to create a work that asks the viewer to question the very act of watching an image. On the other hand, in my classes, I have also learned how to use video production techniques to communicate with others through such forms as projection mapping and music videos. I have learned the basics of scriptwriting and composition as well as how to use cutting-edge technology. This, along with giving routine feedback on other students’ projects, has been a source of inspiration for my work. In the future, I hope to share my work with many more people. My dream is to someday have an exhibition at a contemporary art museum in New York.

    Taking a broad-minded approach to exploring new possibilities in video and media art.

    Video is a complex art form. Some students create animations that mix video and pictorial expression, while others create works that combine video and three-dimensional modeling. I myself research forms of expression that combine socially engaged art and video, or works that engage with society. For those wishing to enter this field, it is essential to have an interest in other artistic fields that can include anything from painting, music, or theater to film and literature. It is important to explore the complex possibilities of expression but also to have the ability to put that knowledge into practice. Short films, promotional videos, stop-motion animation—there are many different forms of video art, and your interests very much depend on you as an individual. The appeal of this course is that it allows students to freely explore whatever it is that they want to do. You can develop your talents to the fullest in your chosen field while also drawing inspiration from the works and ideas of your fellow artists. Take advantage of your time in a university environment to absorb knowledge by studying and spending time with people in other courses and faculties and transform your collage of experiences into a work of art.

    The field of video and media art is varied and wide-ranging. For example, in animation alone, there are a variety of techniques, which can also be combined with other forms of expression such as live performances and physical materials. Now, with the development of digital tools, anyone can shoot and edit fairly high-quality video. It is crucial to have the ability to display your individuality because of this; video is a medium that is accessible to everyone and allows a high degree of freedom, so the first step to creation is to select the technique that best represents your personality. Then, if you are tenacious enough to pursue your interests with an insatiable curiosity, your individuality will naturally emerge. Nowadays, with such a wide variety of works available online, the internet is incredibly useful for doing research and making videos because works are archived regardless of when they were made or how famous they are. Even so, I recommend that everyone go to a cinema or a screening to actually watch films. On a proper screen, the sound and level of detail are completely different than on a small screen. You will be influenced by the emotion of the cinematic experience, and you will learn to let others feel that same emotion through your own work. We are with you as you hone your sensibilities and learn to express your individuality over the course of these four years.
