New faculties will be opened from April, 2021.

Kyoto Seika University is opening two new faculties and one cross disciplinary degree-program, dedicated to researching topics related to the global society, which is comprised of a rich diversity of people, and new forms of expression via technologies that enrich the cultural experience of vast audiences, aiming to anticipate the ever-changing future of modern society, and to actively support positive change.


Faculty of Global Culture

Integrating global and local perspectives, students are encouraged to assist in progress toward a better society, allowing coexistence of people with diverse values.

Department of Humanities (Faculty of Global Culture)

Students study literature, history, society and the culture of Japan to better understand the world as it continues to globalize. Through their courses, students personally experience and deepen their understanding of the culture of Japan.

Study Flow

  • 1st year (foundation studies)

    Everyone learns the basics of literature, history, society and the culture of Japan. Individuals discover the topics that interest them while learning about the elements that make up the culture and structure of modern society.

  • From 2nd year, the course separates into four majors.

  • Literature

    Open up the world of literature through unique aspects of Japanese literature.

  • History

    Reading and understanding historical materials, gaining understanding from various perspectives, and learning about the future of human society.

  • Society

    Considering society from various perspectives, and learning sociological theories and methodologies in a historical context.

  • Japanese Culture

    Learning about Japan's tangible and intangible cultural assets such as Manga, Animation, music, movie etc. as well as traditional culture and examining Japan's evolution towards modernity.

Learning Outcomes

Study in Kyoto

Kyoto has developed as a hub of cultural transmission over a very long time. This course offers a wealth of practical learning which takes advantage of the cultural riches of Kyoto, where tradition and modernity coexist.

Learning through experience

In the 3rd year of the course, students leave the campus to conduct fieldwork. They choose their destinations according to personal study interests.

Department of Global Studies (Faculty of Global Culture)

Students analyze globalization with its significant impact on local cultures and living from a variety of perspectives, and develop skills to understand the world. Students learn about cultures and society.

Study Flow

  • 1st year (foundation studies)

    Students learn the basics of global society and culture. As preparation for deepening their majors from the second year onwards, they learn about Japanese culture as well and foster global and local perspectives.

  • After 2nd year, the courses separate into three majors.

  • Global Relations

    In the context of a global society, we contemplate what it means to be a “country” and consider the relationships between countries.

  • Global Society

    Exploring what society should be to allow people with different languages and lifestyles to live together.

  • African and Asian Culture

    Based on African and Asian culture, society, history, etc.., students study the global society in the coming era and deepen their understanding.

Learning Outcomes

Looking at the world from Africa and Asia

Students focus on the African and Asian regions which are attracting international attention from various perspectives (cultural, history, economic development, etc.) and develop the ability to forecast the future of globalized society.

Gain multiple overseas experiences

Studying abroad and conducting long-term research on-site is required. The knowledge gained by immersion in a different culture forms a solid foundation for seeing the world independently. This also involves language study before studying abroad.

Faculty of Media Creation

Enriching cultural experience through popular culture, technology and business initiatives

Department of Media Creation (Faculty of Media Creation)

The courses develop students’ creative abilities, enabling them to generate new ideas and values through gaining extensive knowledge of media and content as well as business skills. Another feature of these courses is that students can acquire skills in programming and new technologies that are essential for innovative new concepts.

Study flow

  • 1st year (foundation studies)

    Media platforms that deliver music and videos to viewers are changing constantly as new technology evolves. In the first year, students gain a basic understanding of media systems and cutting-edge technology.

  • From 2nd year, the course separates into the following three majors:

  • Sound Creation

    Specialized methods of expression and knowledge of transmission methods are acquired, centering on music and sound production.

  • Image Creation

    Methods of expression for visual content creation such as video, are studied, together with the means and techniques for diversifying content distribution.

  • Media Technologies

    Students learn about the predicted connections between people and information that will become prevalent in the future, and create new media tools such as web functions, apps and IoT.

*IoT: the Internet of Things. A linked system by which various devices are connected to the internet and able to exchange information.

Expression and Technology

Acquiring the ability to engage in research about modern society and to discover key issues, students express their findings through technology to provide enriched cultural experience to many people.

Content Production

Students learn about both content production and programming technologies in fields such as music and video, and are nurtured creatively, developing the capacity for cutting-edge expression.

Developing Business Acumen

Many classes nurture business ability, in relation to “contents business” and “cultural management theory” helping students to build the knowledge and skills required in these four years to demonstrate their potential to society.

Human Environment Design Program (Cross-disciplinary degree program)

Designing lifestyles and urban/social environments by gaining expertise in five faculties.



Based in the Department of Architecture, students gain expertise in five faculties of the university. The aim is to develop creative ability to design innovation in human living and lifestyles as well as urban/social environment planning.

Specialized curriculum

Conducting on-site surveys (field work) in Japan and overseas; all students will learn off-campus for several months, experiencing various environments in which people live, and cultivating their proposal skills based on experience.
