Dorms & Houses

Iwakura is one of those places in Kyoto where it is easy to observe layers of successive development. Historic sites such as Jisso-in temple and Meiji-era statesman Iwakura Tomomi’s house are reached through old and winding narrow streets lined with old walled farmhouse compounds and their white kura storehouses, among still-cultivated rice-fields. Other residential areas are more suburban in atmosphere, and more recent apartment buildings (“mansions”) and convenience stores show the trend towards a different Kyoto lifestyle.
