Accommodation
is provided at KSU's International Student Houses (see photos
& links below) for our first-year ryugakusei, exchange
students, and incoming exchange groups.
(Due
to space limitations, research students can't stay in the dorms,
but are assisted on arrival to find other suitable accommodation).
These
dorms are
located close to our campus in northern Kyoto (Iwakura), and provide
economical simply-furnished
rooms with shared kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities. Rooms
are single-occupancy only. They cannot be shared or sub-let. Room
charges vary according to size, and are quite reasonable compared
to other available accommodation:
Hachijo (8
tatami-mat size) rooms cost 13,000 yen per month (plus 7,000 yen
utilities charge, covering electricity, gas, and water). Total:20,000
yen per month
Rokujo (6 tatami-mat size)
rooms cost 10,000 yen per month (plus 6,000 yen utilities
charge, covering electricity, gas, and water). Total: 16,000
yen per month
Yojo-han (4 1/2 tatami-mat
size) rooms cost 8,000 yen per month (plus 4,500 yen utilities
charge, covering electricity, gas, and water ) Total: 12,500
yen per month.
For all rooms there is an additional once-only charge per
semester for
rental futon set: 10,500
yen (updated
Dec 2008; to be paid on arrival).
The
full semester's rent must be paid within the first week after arrival,
or within
one month at the latest. Rent
is not pro-rated in the case of a shorter stay in the last month of
residence.
Students are fully responsible for their own cleaning,
cooking, and laundry.
Internet is available in each room (100Mbps
Ethernet cable service), free
of charge. Seika
also has wireless access in some parts of campus (password required).

LIVING
EXPENSES:
Japan IS a
fairly expensive place to live. (Though Kyoto
compares very favorably
with Tokyo...)
Living fairly simply and mostly
cooking for yourself (Seika's cafeteria is
quite cheap
too), food expenses will come to approximately
30-40,000 yen per month.
Comparative cost of dorm:
Rent for a room at
a local geshuku,
(student dorm) would be around 20-25,000 yen
per month (with extra charges for utilities,
but probably no Internet access).
A small apartment
with mini-kitchen and bath could cost from
from 40,000 to 50,000 yen per month, usually
with an expensive non-refundable "key
money" payment.
The
cheapest furnished room accommodation ("monthly mansion"
with private kitchen & shower) that we know of here is
49,000 yen per month.
