Process overview:

To apply for exchange at Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU), you must first be selected by KSU's International Exchange Committee. You need to provide a portfolio of art work, and pass an interview test. You must also take a TOEFL test and satisfy the committee members that your English is good enough for you to study successfully in the Netherlands. After your exchange is approved by KSU, you need to take the following steps (see HKU's Application procedure page):

1) Fill out HKU's Application for Exchange Students
2) Prepare your portfolio (A4 clearbook, slides, or CD-ROM) with English captions
3) Write a letter of self-introduction ("letter of motivation") stating your purpose of study at UIAH.
4) Prepare a CV (curriculum vitae)
5) Get a transcript in English from KSU's Kyomu-ka
6) Get a letter of recommendation from your teacher or head of department

KSU's International Office will mail these documents to HKU.
When you have been accepted by HKU they will send an Acceptance Letter and information package

Deadline for exchange application:

See HKU's Accommodation page for exchange students for full details.

"To apply, you need to register at www.shortstaysolutions.nl as a guest of the Utrecht School of the Arts and follow the instructions on the site. Short Stay Solutions offers a wide variety of furnished rooms in and around Utrecht especially reserved for guests of Utrecht School of Arts. You can register as of 1st June. As of 1st July you will be approved!"

After your application is approved you need to log in "early and often" to check the status of your registration, (to see if you have any offers) because only a limited number of rooms will offered, and the cheaper ones will soon be taken. Rooms offered may be single or shared. Choose carefully -- if you do reserve a room, it is difficult to cancel.

Estimated living expenses for one semester (not including accommodation): Approximately 60,000 yen per month
Cost of accommodation for one semester:

Room rent is between € 375 to € 450 (52,000 to 62,000 yen) per month)

Visa application process:
Most foreign students need a residence permit in order to be allowed to live and study in the Netherlands. This permit for the purpose of study is called VVR (Verblijfsvergunning voor Bepaalde tijd Regulier). Other useful visa information here.

Students coming from Japan need to apply for a VVR as soon as they have arrived in the Netherlands. You do not need a visa, so you can make your travel arrangements as soon as you are admitted to the Utrecht School of the Arts. Please make sure you meet the conditions for obtaining this VVR before you travel to the Netherlands (most importantly: make sure you have the needed amount of money!) Requirements for VVR here.
