Outbound Exchange to:

School of Art & Design (U-M A&D)

Website: art-design.umich.edu

Process overview:

To apply for exchange at U-M A&D, you must first be selected by KSU's International Exchange committee. You need to provide a portfolio, and pass an interview test. You must also take a TOEFL test (the result must be sent by TOEFL to U-M's International office) and satisfy the committee members that you are proficient enough in English to study successfully in the US. After your exchange is approved by KSU, we need to send the following documents to U-M A&D:

1) U-M's Undergraduate Non-degree Application (2 pages)
2) U-M Financial Resources Statement (2 pages)
3) Your portfolio (A4 clearbook, slides, or CD-ROM), showing your recent works.
4) Your statement of purpose and study plan (in English)
5) A letter of recommendation, from your teacher or head of department
6) Your bank statement in English, showing that you (or your parents) have personal funds covering 4 months living expenses (around $6,000 / approximately ¥655,000) including accommodation, food, art supplies etc.
(Please ask for two bank statements — you will need another for your visa application).

After U-M processes this information, they will send you the DS-2109 document that you need to make a visa application (see below).

Deadline for exchange application: March 15, for Fall term

Accommodation: Seika students who go to U-M A&D on exchange usually share an apartment as this works out cheaper and better than the dorm. However, if you need to apply for a dorm room, you can request a faxed application form here. For more information, check out the virtual tour pages and U-M Housing Office pages, including the dorm rental rates page. Single rooms may be available in the Baits dorms. Another very nice location with apartment-style accommodation is the Northwood 3 complex, close by North Campus. They have searchable offcampus housing listings too. Also, see their excellent maps and directions pages.
Estimated living expenses for one semester (not including accommodation): Approx. $3,000 (327,000 yen)
Cost of accommodation for one semester:
$2,700 (Baits Dorm, room only: approx. 295,000 yen)

Visa application process: After receiving your DS-2019 from U-M A&D, you can fill out and download the online Electronic Visa Application Form (DS-156).
(Important: it is necessary to use Internet Explorer!).
There are also two other forms, the DS-157 and DS-158, to download and fill out.
You must pay a SEVIS fee of $100, which can be paid online by credit card on the SEVIS I-901 page.
After you fill out the Electronic Visa Application form you need to make an appointment online (see checklist of necessary documents etc in English and in Japanese) for an interview at the US Osaka Consulate). The appointments page is accessed here. You will need to select to pay a $131 application fee (as of September 2008) either online, or by Pay Easy at a bank ATM or Post Office ATM, within 48 hours.
After you pay the fee, a "Visa Appointment Notice" is e-mailed to you (PDF format) to print out and bring to the interview.
