How to Apply

To apply for exchange at Turku, you must first be selected by KSU's International Exchange Committee. You need to provide a portfolio of art work, and pass an interview test. You must also take a TOEFL test and satisfy the committee members that your English is good enough for you to study successfully in Finland.
After your exchange is approved by KSU, please prepare the following materials:

1) You can apply online here: Erasmus Application for International Exchange, and ECTS Learning Agreement
2) Prepare your portfolio (A4 clearbook) with English captions
3) Write a letter of self-introduction stating your purpose of study at Turku.
4) Prepare a CV (curriculum vitae)
5) Get a transcript in English from KSU's Kyomu-ka
6) Get a letter of recommendation from your teacher or head of department

KSU's International Office will mail these documents to Turku.
When you have been accepted by Turku they will send an Acceptance Letter and information package


Deadline for exchange application: April 1st

Accommodation: Students on exchange at Turku have used Uni Hostel or Student Hostel accommodation at the Student Village Foundation of Turku (TYS) Information here. . An application form should be sent with your letter of acceptance (application also available here, click flag for English version).You must apply at least 6 weeks before arrival.

On acceptance, please pay a security deposit of 250€ (approx. 34,000 yen as of June 2009) by bank transfer. Fax the receipt and confirmation letter to TYS at +358 2 2376 932

Rooms are rented for the full calendar month, and are usually available after 12 noon on the first day of the month (except Sat, Sun, or holidays). Rent must be paid by the 6th of each month.

Student Hostel (single room) rent is 271€ per month (approx. 37,000 yen); Shared Apartments (3 bedrooms, mainly used by exchange students) cost 195 - 252€ per month (approx. 27,000 - 35,000 yen). The security deposit is returned by bank transfer about one month after you move out.

Visa application process:

To enter Finland as a student, you don't need a visa, but you must apply for a Residence Permit.

The Embassy of Finland (Tokyo) has basic information on the Residence Permit in Japanese and English. See also their detailed instructions, in Japanese and English.

Access the Finnish Directorate of Immigration website, download the necessary forms (see below) from the Application Forms page, and fill them out.

To apply for your Residence Permit at the Finnish Consulate in Osaka, you need these documents :

1) OLE 1 Residence Permit Application form (2 sets)
2) OLE4 Account of the Applicant's Studies form (questionnaire) (2 sets)
3) Letter of Support (in English, provided by International Office)
4) Acceptance Letter from Turku
5) Letter guaranteeing financial support (signed by parents, format available from KSU International Office, in English)
6) Bank Statement (original, in English, in your name if using your own money, or from your parents) You need to show that you have 500 Euros per month of stay. (Or a letter showing that you have a scholarship or study grant providing sufficient funds).
7) Passport (with two copies of the passport personal information page, and 1 copy of all stamped pages, on A4 paper)
8) Two passport-type photos (photo 47 x 36mm, face 32-36mm)
9) Application Fee (Processing fee for Residence/Work permit: 100 Euro (13,000 yen as of April 2009) paid in Japanese yen, when applying for the permit.)
10) AIU Insurance certificate (or equivalent, covering 15,000,000 yen cost of care) Must be original document.
11) Your latest TOEIC/TOEFL results (showing English proficiency)

Processing of documents may take 45 days, so please BE SURE TO APPLY EARLY. You should not leave for Finland earlier than one week before Orientation.

Cultural education in Turku has a long history. The Turku School of Fine Arts was established in 1830, the Turku Conservatoire in 1962 and the Turku School of Arts and Communication in 1991.
The tradition of all the above educational institutions are preserved within the walls of the Arts Academy.

Turku University of Applied Sciences is a multidisciplinary institution of higher education that offers competitive qualifications for international careers in seven educational fields.

Presently, we have about 8000 students studying towards their Bachelor’s degree and about 45 students studying Master's degree. We provide continuing education to 5500 students annually. Applied research also plays a significant role in our work.
