Process overview:
To apply for exchange at ECA, you must first be selected by KSU's International Exchange Committee. You need to provide a portfolio of art work, and pass an interview test. You must also take a TOEFL test and satisfy the committee members that your English is good enough for you to study successfully in the UK. After your exchange is approved by KSU, please prepare the following materials:

1) Fill out ECA's Application for Exchange Students
2) Prepare your portfolio of 15-20 works (a light A4 clearbook, slides, or CD-ROM) with English titles/descriptions
3) Write a study plan ("personal motivation statement") stating your purpose of study at ECA (Describe your art & design interests, how you will make use of this opportunity, and what you expect from your visit).
4)Get a transcript in English from KSU's Kyomu-ka
5) Write a short CV (personal history)

KSU's International Office will mail these documents to ECA.
After you have been accepted by ECA you will receive an Acceptance Letter and information package

Deadline for exchange application: May 1

Accommodation:

If possible, the best way to arrange accommodation is to take over a GSA exchange student's room while they are away. Most third-year students live in shared flats (apartments) where rent is from about £280 - £300 per month (plus extra for utilities). ECA assists exchange students in finding accommodation wherever possible.
ECA organises a mailing scheme to which students can add their names if looking for private accommodation. This list, including contact e-mail addresses and telephone numbers, will be circulated regularly to everyone on the list from mid July - September to enable students to group together in order to look for flats.
See advertisements for rooms available at http://eportal.eca.ac.uk.
(If you wish to join this scheme please complete and return the Accommodation Mailing Scheme form and return it to Student Services)".

"Many of our students rent privately and there are a number of letting agents in Edinburgh - these are best researched through the internet. You can find a comprehensive list of companies on the website www.yell.co.uk
Some of our students find the website www.studentpad.com very useful when searching for accommodation.

UPDATE: ECA has arranged a connection with Grant Management Flatshare

Just give the team a call on 0845 230 2200 or 0131 247 3145 and quote "Edinburgh Art College Rooms."

Visa application process:

You do NOT need a visa to study in the UK. But you will need to show the following documents to an Immigration Officer at the airport when you first arrive in the UK:

1) a bank statement showing that your account (or your parents’) contains enough money to cover your living expenses while you are on exchange.
2) A letter from KSU's International Office certifying that you are an exchange student, and that you do not need to pay fees to ECA.
3) Your official letter of acceptance from ECA
4) A return air ticket, UK / Japan
5) A letter saying that you have accommodation already
arranged
in Edinburgh. (From ECA or KSU)

It’s a good idea also to arrange personal health insurance, and travel insurance, before you leave.
