earlier in August to find a place to live before beginning your
classes.
Estimated living
expenses for one semester (not including accommodation): Students
might pay $50 per week for groceries (if they don't eat too many meals at
home). Groceries in Manhattan are expensive. They are considerably cheaper
in the other Boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island). Restaurants
are plentiful in the East Village, where Cooper is located. Good and nutritious
dinners can cost just a few dollars.
Students usually live in Brooklyn or Queens. Commute time to school is under
30 minutes. Subway fare is $2. Buses are also $2. (Taxi fare is $2.50 to start
and 30 cents for each additional fifth of a mile and 20 cents for sixty seconds
of stop time. There is a 50 cent charge between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m).
There are many things to do in the city that are either free or offer student
discounts. Art supplies can be costly. Several art supply stores are located
within walking or a short subway ride away from school. Prices vary widely depending
on the quality of the supplies.
Local
Information (Neighborhood resources)
Cost of accommodation for one semester:
Rents are very high in New York. The student
residence hall (if available)
costs about $4,700 - $5,000 per semester. It is fairly new, located
across the street from school. Students live in a suite sharing living
room, kitchen and bath with 4-6 other students. They most often also
share a bedroom with another student. It is a first-year residence
hall so the students are usually 17-18 years old. Application here.
If students share an apartment, which is the usual way students live
in New York, the rent could be any where from $400 to $1000 per month.
If utilities are to be paid, the electric bill is around $30 per student
per month and cooking gas perhaps $10-15. Of course this depends on
how many students share the apt.

Vital Information:
The
Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, established
in 1859, is among the nation's oldest and most distinguished institutions
of higher learning. The college, the legacy of Peter Cooper, occupies
a special place in the history of American education. It is the
only private, full-scholarship college in the United States dedicated
exclusively to preparing students for the professions of art, architecture
and engineering.
Cooper Union exploits New York's diversity
and resources as its extended campus. Student artists, sculptors
and photographers study in the great museums, visit studios and
galleries and work at a wide range of art internships. The School
of Architecture taps in to New York's architectural community and
the rich legacy is built on the environment.
