Process overview:
Exchange at Bard is offered to Humanities students as well as Art students. To apply for exchange at Bard, you must first be selected by KSU's International Exchange Committee. You need to pass an interview test. You must also take a TOEFL test and satisfy the committee members that your English is good enough for you to study successfully in the US. After your exchange is approved by KSU, we need to send the following documents to Bard:

1) a copy of your transcript in English.
2) a letter of recommendation
3) an official copy of an English proficiency test. (see below).
4) for art students, a portfolio on DVD.
5) foreign student certification of finances (see under Admissions on the Bard web site).

International students may apply using the Bard International Exchange Application form. Candidates whose first language is not English must submit the result of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 545 (paper based), 225 (computer based), and 90 (Internet based). Bard College also accepts the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum band score of 6 in the academic module.

Accommodation:
The more than 40 student residences vary in architectural characteristics, social style, and size. Most of the residence halls are coed, and almost half the rooms are for single occupancy. Residence halls are equipped with extension phones, Internet access, social rooms, kitchens, and laundries.
Students living on campus are required to be on the meal plan. Students on the meal plan enjoy the flexibility of dining at the hour of their choice in the campus dining commons. They may also use their meal card in the cafés located in the Bertelsmann Campus Center and Ward Manor residence hall and the Green Onion, an on-campus grocery store.

Estimated living expenses for one semester (not including accommodation): Room + board (meal plan) + health services fee + student activity fee + security deposit + ID card fee + SEVIS fee + Security deposit ($225, refundable at end of semester) = $6,410)

Visa application process:
After receiving your DS-2019 from Bard, you can fill out and download the online Electronic Visa Application Form (DS-156).
(Important: it is necessary to use Internet Explorer!).
There are also two other forms, the DS-157 and DS-158, to download and fill out.
You must pay a SEVIS fee of $100, which can be paid online by credit card on the SEVIS I-901 page.
After you fill out the Electronic Visa Application form you need to make an appointment online (see checklist of necessary documents etc in English and in Japanese) for an interview at the US Osaka Consulate).The appointments page is accessed here. You will need to select to pay a $131 application fee (as of September 2008) either online, or by Pay Easy at a bank ATM or Post Office ATM, within 48 hours.
After you pay the fee, a "Visa Appointment Notice" is e-mailed to you (PDF format) to print out and bring to the interview.

A self-addressed "EXPACK 500" envelope (available at post offices and some convenience stores)

Founded in 1860, Bard is a four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. The campus, a fusion of two historic riverfront estates, is located in the Hudson Valley.
Approximately 1,600 undergraduates study at the Annandale campus; 52 percent female, 48 percent male, usually representing 50 states. Seventy-six percent of students are from out of state. Eighty-five percent of students live on campus. Four percent of students are African American, 4 percent Asian, 5 percent Hispanic, and 12 percent international (representing 51 countries worldwide). The typical undergraduate class has 18 students.
